GooseWatch NYC said on Facebook before the run off election on October, 1: “Few elected officials have been more outspoken about the killing of geese in NYC than Letitia “Tish” James. Although GooseWatch NYC only plans to officially endorse in City Council races this year, we must acknowledge one candidate who has been a steadfast advocate for NYC’s Canada geese, and that is Letitia “Tish” James for Public Advocate.
NYC Council woman Letitia “Tish” James, said in 2012 “I strongly opposed the killing of 400 Canada geese in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in 2010, and I oppose the USDA’s plan to kill Canada geese at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and other New York City parks. Geese are part of the natural habitat of many City parks, where they live permanently. To disrupt the local eco-system and wipe out these animals is unwarranted.”
Democrat Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was responsible for the slaughter of 751 Canada Geese at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in 2012 and hundreds more in 2013. Watch some videos here by David Karopkin, Founder and Director of GooseWatch NYC.
James will become the only woman to hold city-wide office in New York City in 2014 and the first woman of color ever to do so.
Councilwoman Letitia James’ runoff victory remarks, “I am humbled to join you tonight and announce that we have won this campaign and we are on to the Office of New York City Public Advocate. I ran for Public Advocate because all my life I have seen New Yorkers persevere and I’ve seen the role that government can play in helping uplift working people. New York: our work isn’t over. But tonight we’ll celebrate this victory because we achieved it together.” Read more here.
